Snowy forests, a frozen surface, and hundreds of kilometers of groomed tracks – that’s what winter at Lake Lipno looks like. Both beginners and experienced cross-country skiers will find something for themselves here. The trails lead through plains and rugged terrain, often with great views of the reservoir or the Bohemian Forest peaks.
The trails between Frymburk and Lipno nad Vltavou are among the best-maintained in the entire Lake Lipno region. They offer short, approximately five-kilometer circuits for relaxed rides as well as longer, fifteen-kilometer routes for those who want to train. They often lead through undulating terrain with views of the reservoir; the route from Frymburk via Svatonina Lhota to the viewpoint at Kramolín is also popular.
The surroundings of Přední Výtoň and Vítkův hrádek belong to the technically more demanding cross-country skiing terrains in the Lake Lipno region. Steeper climbs and brisk descents await you, but the reward is some of the best views in the region. Vítkův hrádek, the highest-situated castle in the Czech Republic, is literally within reach here, and on a clear day, you can see all the way to the Alps.
Horní Planá and Hůrka offer some of the most extensive cross-country skiing trails in the entire Lake Lipno region. Local circuits are part of the Lipno Arterial Trail, which connects several locations and provides the opportunity to set out on a day-long cross-country trip. For example, the route from Horní Planá towards Jelení vrchy is popular – mostly flat and ideal for a relaxed pace as well as less experienced skiers.
When the frost grips Lake Lipno and the ice layer is thick enough, an opportunity arises that doesn’t happen every winter – cross-country skiing directly on the frozen surface. The tracks often connect the main centers, so you can ski between Lipno nad Vltavou, Frymburk, or Horní Planá with breathtaking views of the snowy shores.
Detailed tips, safety recommendations, and other activities on the ice can be found on the page Zamrzlé Lipno – aktivity.
The Lake Lipno region also thinks about families with children who want to discover the beauties of the surroundings on cross-country skis. Shorter, flat circuits in the vicinity of Lipno are ideal for young beginners, whether they just want a few laps for practice or their first family trip. Thanks to the undemanding terrain and well-maintained tracks, children quickly learn the basics of cross-country skiing and parents can enjoy a shared ride without stress.
On the route, you will also often come across places where children can rest, have hot tea, or something small to eat. And if you want to make cross-country skiing a real adventure, plan a trip with a goal at a place where there is a playground, a viewpoint, or other entertainment.
So why not also teach the youngsters on, for example:
The circuit at the Treetop Walkway – an approximately 3 km long easy circuit with minimal elevation gain, ideal for the first cross-country skiing attempts. In addition, you can combine skiing with a visit to the walkway itself and other attractions in Lipno nad Vltavou.
The Frymburk Children’s Circuit – roughly a 2 km long trail designed specifically for small cross-country skiers. Gentle terrain and high-quality track maintenance guarantee children positive first experiences with cross-country skiing.
Easier circuits near Horní Planá – several shorter trails with a simple profile and beautiful views of snowy Lake Lipno. Thanks to easy accessibility and a quiet environment, an ideal choice for family trips.
If you belong to the sportier cross-country skiers, Lake Lipno can be just the starting line for you. Local trails connect to the extensive network of the Šumava Arterial Trail, which will lead you to the most beautiful corners of the national park. You can set out, for example, from Nová Pec or Stožec and continue easily all day – or plan a multi-day expedition. Just keep in mind that a good level of fitness and terrain orientation are required here.
Don’t have cross-country skis, or don’t want to drag them across half the country? No problem. In the main centers at Lake Lipno – in Lipno nad Vltavou, Frymburk, and Horní Planá – you will find rental shops with complete equipment. Take your skis, boots, poles, and you can set off immediately. A one-day rental usually costs 300–400 CZK, and if you take the equipment for multiple days, you often get a discount. A great solution for those who just want to try cross-country skiing, or for families with children who grow quickly and need different sizes every season.
