The History of Vítkův Hrádek
The castle was founded in the 13th century by the Vítkovci family as a border fortress and the administrative center of the estate. Over the centuries, its owners changed, including the Rožmberk family. In the 14th century, Vítkův Hrádek became the place where King Wenceslas IV was briefly imprisoned. The castle served its purpose until the mid-18th century, when it began to fall into disrepair.
Today, only the remains of the walls and the tower survive, but they still tell of its former glory. From the tower, a panoramic view opens over the Lipno reservoir, the Šumava Mountains, and the Austrian Alps. Right below the tower, there’s also a small kiosk for refreshments.
