History and Significance of the Boubín Forest
The Boubín Forest has been protected since the 19th century, when it was declared by Prince Jan Schwarzenberg. Its existence is proof of what the original Bohemian Forest landscape looked like before massive deforestation. The forest is home to many rare species of plants and animals that find ideal living conditions here. Its area is 666.41 ha.
Flora and Fauna of the Boubín Forest
The forest is dominated by old spruces, firs, and beeches, which reach respectable sizes and ages. Rare plants include, for example, February daphne, sword-leaved helleborine, and various species of orchids. The forest is home to many species of animals, such as the lynx, red deer, black woodpecker, and western capercaillie.
Visiting the Boubín Forest
- A nature trail is available for visitors, leading through the peripheral parts of the forest. The trail is approximately 4 km long and offers views of the forest’s most interesting spots.
- Since June 29, 2023, the part of the forest around the Boubín Lake has been reopened to the public.
- Visitors should behave considerately towards nature and follow nature protection rules.
- Entry to the central part of the forest is restricted to preserve its uniqueness.
- At the top of Boubín, there is an observation tower offering a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape.
