Hluboká Castle – Seat of the Schwarzenberg Family

Hluboká Castle is one of the most striking Neo-Gothic buildings in the Czech Republic. Thanks to its architecture, interiors, and extensive park, it is one of the most visited monuments in the region.

History and Development of the Castle

Hluboká Castle was established in the 13th century as a royal fortress. From the 17th century, it belonged to the Schwarzenberg family, who gradually expanded and modified it. The most significant transformation took place in the 19th century when Prince Johann Adolf II and his wife Eleonora had the residence rebuilt in a Neo-Gothic style inspired by Windsor Castle in England. It was this reconstruction that gave the castle its current character.

Architecture and Main Features

Hluboká Castle is an example of romantic Neo-Gothic architecture inspired by Windsor. Typical is its white exterior with towers, battlements, and bay windows. The interiors feature detailed woodcarvings decorating walls, ceilings, and staircases. The complex also includes a Neo-Gothic chapel, a vast castle garden in the English style, and a riding hall, which today houses the AJG gallery.

What you can see here:

  • Castle Exterior – white facade, towers, battlements, bay windows.
  • Interiors – detailed woodcarvings, period furniture, paintings.
  • Castle Chapel – Neo-Gothic chapel with stained glass windows.
