Český Krumlov – The Pearl of South Bohemia You Must See

Český Krumlov, a UNESCO-listed town in South Bohemia, is among the most beautiful historical places in the Czech Republic. Within a small area, you will find more than 300 protected monuments, one of the oldest Baroque theatres in the world, and the second largest castle complex in the country.

History and Architecture of Český Krumlov That Will Enchant You

The history of Český Krumlov dates back to the 13th century, when the Vítkovci family founded the original Český Krumlov Castle. Over the centuries, the complex grew into its current form, significantly shaped by the Rožmberk, Eggenberg, and later Schwarzenberg families. The town’s landmarks include the iconic castle tower, the Cloak Bridge, and a unique Baroque theatre. The atmosphere of Krumlov is also enhanced by the bears in the castle moat, a tradition dating back to the 16th century. The historic centre consists of narrow streets lined with Renaissance and Baroque houses, creating an atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else in the Czech Republic.

Where to Park in Český Krumlov: Practical Information for Visitors

Český Krumlov has a historic centre with a large pedestrian zone, so it’s good to keep in mind that you cannot get into the heart of the town by car. Therefore, the city has built a modern parking system P1–P7, which surrounds the centre and is well marked. The most frequently used is P1 Jelení zahrada, which is just a few minutes from the castle, the castle gardens, and the Cloak Bridge.

On all main parking lots, a practical rule applies: the first 40 minutes are free.

Český Krumlov for Families with Children

Children are mostly entertained by the bears in the castle moat, which have been traditionally associated with Krumlov for centuries.

A major attraction is also the Seidel Photo Studio Museum, a unique Art Nouveau studio where the famous postcards of the Bohemian Forest were created. Families can try period photography in costumes, an experience children remember for a long time.

For smaller children, the interactive exhibitions in the Krumlov Monasteries are great, where they can try medieval crafts, costumes, or candle making. And if you have fairytale lovers at home, they will surely be thrilled by the Fairytale House (Pohádkový dům), full of puppets and scenery.

For more active children, there is the Havranka via ferrata, which leads directly over the river with a view of the historic centre. It’s not long, but it’s a fun and unique experience and a great alternative to a regular walk.

Interesting Fact About Český Krumlov

A replica of Český Krumlov was built in China. Huawei recreated parts of the historic centre of Krumlov at its campus in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan.

Tip: You can also reach Český Krumlov by train

If you don’t want to worry about parking or want to make the trip more interesting, you can also go to Český Krumlov by train. The journey is one of the most beautiful in the region – the train passes through the meadows and forests of the Bohemian Forest, so the ride itself is a pleasant experience. Children often say the trip starts the moment the train moves.
