Devil’s Wall and Stone Sea: A Magical Place at Lake Lipno

A 10 km loop that starts as an easy walk from Lipno but soon pulls you into the wild granite landscape of the Bohemian Forest. A rock labyrinth, 11 unique formations and two viewpoints that are worth every step.
From the car park into the rock labyrinth: The first kilometres deceive
We start from the central car park below the ski slopes in Lipno nad Vltavou. The first four kilometres are an easy warm-up on asphalt, passing a mouflon enclosure. About one kilometre below the summit, the character of the trail changes. The path becomes steeper – and this is where the best part of the hike begins.
Mount Luč (933 m a.s.l.) rises above the village of Loučovice. Its name likely comes from an Old Slavic word meaning “separation” – the mountain stands apart from the main ridge of the Bohemian Forest, divided by the deep valley of the Vltava River.
As we climb, we pass the first granite formations and a viewpoint overlooking the Lipno II balancing reservoir, the Vltava valley and the Čertovo Kameny rocks. From here, the trail continues through the rocks up to the summit, where it begins to descend more steeply. After about 600 metres you reach the most impressive viewpoint of the entire route – perched on a rock tower more than 10 metres high, accessed by a set of ladders. From the top you can enjoy wide views of Lipno, the surrounding forests, the dam and the Vltava River. After the viewpoint, the trail continues downhill towards the river.
Descent to the Vltava and return along the lakeside promenade
After the viewpoint, the trail drops steeply through the forest towards the Vltava. About one kilometre before the dam, you step directly onto the asphalt of the Lipno – Vyšší Brod cycle path. The silence of the forest gives way to the sound of the river – a pleasant change after the technical descent. From here it’s only a short walk to the Lipno I dam, which you cross before following the lakeside cycle path and lively promenade back to the car park.
