The Saint Wolfgang Waterfalls near Vyšší Brod are among the beautiful natural spots of the Lake Lipno region. You can find them on the Menší Vltavice stream, just a few kilometers from the Vyšší Brod monastery, where the educational Abbot’s Trail leads. These are not classic waterfalls, but high cascades that, in the spring season thanks to melting snow, act as a true water spectacle.

The St. Wolfgang Waterfalls are an inconspicuous but very impressive destination for a walking trip. They lie in the picturesque valley of the Menší Vltavice and combine natural beauty with spiritual tradition. They bear their name after St. Wolfgang, the Bishop of Regensburg, who lived in the 10th century and is the patron saint of Bavaria, boatmen, carpenters, and shepherds.

Route description

You can reach the waterfalls via the Abbot’s Trail I, which begins at the Vyšší Brod monastery. The trail is marked with a yellow tourist sign and forms a loop about 3.7 km long. The path traces a figure-eight shape and returns to the monastery.

• The first part leads through the forest along the Menší Vltavice, where the stream branches out into cascading arms.
• The waterfalls themselves consist of several steps, the highest of which overcomes about 3 meters over a length of eight meters.
• Educational boards along the trail explain the history of the monastery, the life of local residents, and the fauna – such as the stone crayfish or the kingfisher, which occur in the area.
• The Abbot’s Spring – a short unmarked detour takes you to a stone chapel with a symbolic tap. In the chapel window, palms with water, water lilies, and a kingfisher are painted, accompanied by the verse: “When you are tired and rushed, and a shadow has fallen into your heart, scoop me into your hands. I will soothe both body and soul.” By the spring, there is a resting place with a bench – an ideal spot for a short break.

The entire route is easy. From the center of Vyšší Brod, it is less than 2 km to the waterfalls.
