The Southernmost Point of the Czech Republic: A Trip to the End of the World

Stroller: ✅ | Dog:

The southernmost point of the Czech Republic is a hidden destination where crowds of tourists do not flow. Perhaps you have already visited the Treetop Walkway, walked the classic trips at Lake Lipno, or ridden all the well-known cycle paths. But if you are looking for real peace and a touch of wilderness, you have to go further. Exactly to the coordinates 48°33′9″ N and 14°19′59″ E. An authentic experience in untouched nature awaits you, right where our country ends and the other begins.

What exactly awaits you on the trip?

Imagine the moment when you stand by the granite stone with the commemorative plaque and realize: “I am standing at the place where our country ends.” How many of your friends can say they have experienced something similar? How many photos in your album have such a powerful story? Your trip to the southernmost point can be just the beginning. Combine it with a visit to the monumental Cistercian monastery in Vyšší Brod. Explore the mysterious Swedish Ramparts (Švédské šance), remains of military fortifications from the Thirty Years’ War. Or simply let yourself be carried away by the beauty of the Vyšší Brod area nature park.

Just a few steps across the border you’ll find another surprise — fortifications dating back to 1641.

About 200 metres from the southernmost point, already on the Austrian side, lie the remains of a historic defensive structure from the Thirty Years’ War — the so‑called Swedish Ramparts near Radvanov. Earthworks, trenches and information panels recall the time when the strategic salt route passed through here and the area repeatedly served as a defensive point against Swedish troops, Turkish threats and outbreaks of plague. It’s a modest but powerful place that adds another layer to your trip.

3 easy ways to get there

  1. By car within reach – Drive to Vyšší Brod and further towards Dolní Drkolná, where you park and a short, refreshing walk awaits you.
  2. For active explorers – From Vyšší Brod, follow the yellow tourist sign through a beautiful landscape full of surprises.
  3. Insider’s secret shortcut – The fastest access is from the Austrian settlement of Rading.

Did you know that you are further south here than in Paris?

It sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. This tip of the Czech Republic reaches deep into the south. If you were to look at a map of Europe, you would find that you are standing on a lower parallel (further south) than, for example, the center of Paris or the German city of Regensburg. It is a real touch of the south in our parts.

A place that was forbidden for 40 years

Until recently, you wouldn’t have been able to get here. The southernmost point lay in the strictly guarded border zone of the Iron Curtain. Today, the granite obelisk with a commemorative plaque is not only a geographical milestone but also a symbol of the freedom of movement, which you realize more strongly here, in the middle of quiet forests, than anywhere else.
