Relaxing trip along the Schwarzenberg Shipping Canal

If you feel like a trip where the beautiful nature of the Šumava Mountains meets fascinating history, the Schwarzenberg Shipping Canal is a safe bet. We invite you for a short trip that combines the peace of the forest with a technical monument of European significance. You will walk to the upper portal of the Schwarzenberg tunnel, peek at the ventilation shaft, and right by the parking lot, you can see the lower portal as well. Everything is easily accessible by car or bus. The route leads through beautiful terrain that you can manage both on foot and by bike along this Schwarzenberg cycle path. And yes – in some places it really looks like the water is flowing uphill.

The trip begins at Jelení Vrchy at the parking lot with a bus stop. Right at the beginning, we recommend a short walk to the upper and lower portals of the Schwarzenberg tunnel. This remarkable 389-meter-long structure is an example of the mastery of builders from the end of the 18th century. Right in Jelení Vrchy, you can also see the mouth of the Jelení slide. This unique stone channel brought water from the Jelení pond and served to “subsidize” the canal with water and float timber from higher altitudes. Here you can also visit the Schwarzenberg Canal Exhibition (in the old forester’s house) and have a snack at the local buffet – their cakes or soups are famous.

From Jelení Vrchy, you then head downstream of the canal towards Nová Pec. The forest path is comfortable, runs flat (or slightly downhill), and you can manage it even with a stroller. Along the way, you will come across several technical interests, for example, the aqueduct near Rossbach. It is a stone water bridge by which the canal overcomes the Rossbach stream at a height of ten meters.

The destination of the trip is in Nová Pec (Láz part), where you will find a parking lot and a bus stop for an easy return back to Jelení Vrchy or to your accommodation. The route measures less than 10 km and is one of the most relaxing walks in the Šumava Mountains.

📍 Where to rest after a trip along the canal?
