One-day trip to the Šumava Mountains: Conquering Třístoličník
The Šumava Mountains offer countless possibilities for one-day trips. One of the most beautiful and at the same time more demanding destinations is Třístoličník (1,311 m above sea level) – a mountain with unique rock formations and breathtaking views.

Trip to Třístoličník in summer
You can start the trip to Třístoličník at the Černá v Pošumaví railway stop directly in the village of Hůrka. You can reach Nové Údolí by train in less than an hour. From there, a red tourist route leads to the summit. The route is an approximately 7 km demanding trail, not suitable for bikes or strollers. It will reward you with a panorama of the Šumava Mountains and, on a clear day, views as far as the Alps. Right at the viewpoint, you will find a restaurant and iconic rock formations resembling three thrones.
Winter magic of Třístoličník
In winter, Třístoličník has a completely different atmosphere than in summer. People flock to the summit precisely at the time when the sun slowly dips behind the snowy ridges. The sky turns orange, pink, and purple shades, and the entire surroundings feel almost surreal.
The most common access in winter is by car from the German side (via Strážný to Haidmühle and further to the Dreisesselberg parking lot). From there, it is less than a kilometer on foot along an asphalt (plowed in winter) road to the restaurant and rock “thrones”. This section is manageable even with children. The last part leads along natural stone steps directly to the viewing spots.
We go to Třístoličník ourselves and we know that those sunsets are unforgettable – an atmosphere that a photo simply cannot convey. From our apartments, it takes about an hour by car, but the experience is worth it.
Berggasthof Dreisessel mountain hut
Directly below the rock towers is the Berggasthof Dreisessel mountain hut. It is an ideal place to rest in every season. In summer, you will enjoy the sun on the terrace with a view of the Alps; in winter, you can warm up inside by the tiled stove. They serve classic Bavarian cuisine – look forward to honest schnitzels, sausages, soups, and good beer.
