Are you looking for a trip at Lake Lipno that combines beautiful Šumava nature with a truly powerful story? Nové Údolí is exactly such a place. Today it is a quiet point on the map near the Bavarian border, but its history is eventful.
Originally it was a lively lumberjack settlement, which owed its creation and prosperity mainly to the railway from 1910, which connected it with Černý Kříž and Bavaria. Everything changed after 1948 when Nové Údolí found itself in the heart of the forbidden border zone. The original inhabitants were expelled, the village was completely leveled to the ground, and the tracks at the border were symbolically torn up. Today it is a unique meeting place that offers several experiences.

The stylish refreshment stand Krčma Vagon by the station in Nové Údolí serves as a natural starting point for most trips. People often arrive here by train with bikes and continue into nature or for hiking. Right next to the tavern, there is a practical drinking water tap where everyone can refill their bottles for free before their journey.
A short walk from the Krčma Vagon tavern stands another historical carriage – a cooling wagon from the 1920s, which houses a small museum exhibition. It is designed as a timeline from the time of building the local tracks, through the golden age, occupation, the period of dictatorship, up to the present, and contains many unique photographs. Do not expect a polished exhibition, but rather an enthusiast’s attempt to save history.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Museum is unfortunately currently closed due to gradual reconstruction.

This rarity was built by a group of enthusiasts from the Southern Šumava Railway association. They symbolically restored 105 meters of tracks across the state border on the original embankment of the Volary – Passau line, which had been torn up during communism. The track at an altitude of 800 m is thus officially the shortest international railway in the world.
A few meters from the station, you will also find a replica of the Iron Curtain. This memorial, built in 2013, consists of a reconstructed watchtower (the so-called “špačkárna”) and several meters of authentic wire barriers that stood here after 1948. It is a powerful reminder of the time when this border was hermetically closed and accessible only to the border guard.
