Hike to Medvědí hora via Čertovo kopyto (3.8 km, elevation gain 226 m)

Stroller: ❌  |  Dog:

Lake Lipno doesn’t only offer swimming and cycling. Just a few kilometers from its shores hides wild Šumava nature with majestic rocks and dark legends. A trip to Bear Mountain (Medvědí hora) is ideal for those looking for a short but physically intense route with a huge reward in the form of a beautiful view.

The route we will walk is short (approx. 3.8 km one way), but expect a significant climb and challenging terrain with a total elevation gain of 226 m. It is intended for hikers and requires sturdy footwear. The area of Bear Mountain (Medvědí hora) is a protected natural monument, established in 1992.

1. Start: A sharp beginning and Godoš Hermitage

The trip to Bear Mountain (Medvědí hora) begins directly at the parking lot by the Lake Lipno dam (approx. 725 m above sea level). Be prepared right from the start, because the route goes uphill quite sharply until the turn-off to Godoš Hermitage (Godošova poustevna). The path to the hermitage itself is less demanding and leads through a beautiful forest section that is even partly downhill. This hermitage, a rock formation hidden in the forest, is associated with a dark legend about the outlaw Godoš. It is an ideal place for a short reflection in the middle of the quiet forest.

2. Via the Icon: The Legendary Devil’s Hoof

After Godoš Hermitage, the terrain becomes more challenging. The path leads over stones and roots and past rock formations. Soon you will reach one of the most famous points: Devil’s Hoof (Čertovo kopyto) (also known as Gypsy Castle). This iconic rock formation has a characteristic top stone and is also associated with the legend of the robber Godoš. Although there is no direct view from Devil’s Hoof, the rock itself is so monumental that it forms an unforgettable backdrop for a photograph.

3. Destination: Summit on Bear Mountain and an amazing view of Lipno

Devil’s Hoof is only about halfway through the route! After exploring it, another stretch of uphill path awaits you. At the very end of the trip, you will reach the real reward – an amazing view of Lake Lipno and the surrounding Šumava forests. This beautiful panoramic view opens up from the lookout rocks at the summit of Bear Mountain. To enjoy the view, you have to climb onto these stones. Don’t worry, it is not a demanding mountaineering ascent. Even experienced hikers can handle it. The panorama here is the right reward that is worth the effort. It is an ideal place for a final photograph.

Return

From the summit, you can return the same way, or choose a longer but very comfortable variant via Loučovice and along the Vltava River. Combine three Šumava interests in one trip: the mysterious Godoš Hermitage, the iconic Devil’s Hoof, and the rocky viewpoints on Bear Mountain. It is a perfect loop that carries both legends and wonderful views of Lake Lipno.
