Hike to Medvědí hora via Čertovo kopyto (3.8 km, elevation gain 226 m)

Stroller: ❌  |  Dog:

The Lipno Reservoir offers more than just swimming and cycling. Just a few kilometers from its shores lies the wild Šumava nature with majestic rocks and dark legends. The trip to Medvědí hora (Bear Mountain) is ideal for those looking for a short but physically intense trail with a huge reward in the form of a beautiful view.

The route is short (approx. 3.8 km one way), but expect a significant climb and difficult terrain with a total elevation gain of 226 m. It is intended for hikers and requires sturdy footwear. The Medvědí hora area is a protected natural monument, declared in 1992.

1. Start: Sharp Opening and Godoš’s Hermitage

The trip to Medvědí hora starts right at the parking lot by the Lipno Dam (approx. 725 m a.s.l.). Prepare yourself right from the start, as the route goes uphill quite steeply up to the turnoff for Godošova poustevna (Godoš’s Hermitage).

The path to the hermitage itself is less demanding and leads through a beautiful forest passage, part of which is even downhill. This hermitage, a rock formation hidden in the forest, is associated with a dark legend about the outlaw Godoš. It is an ideal place for a brief reflection in the middle of a quiet forest.

2. Past an Icon: Legendary Devil’s Hoof (Čertovo kopyto)

Beyond Godoš’s Hermitage, the terrain becomes more demanding. The path leads over stones and roots and past rock formations. Soon you will reach one of the most famous points: Čertovo kopyto (also known as Cikánský hrad – Gypsy Castle).

This iconic rock formation has a characteristic top stone and is also associated with the legend of the robber Godoš. Although there is no direct view from Čertovo kopyto, the rock itself is so monumental that it makes an unforgettable backdrop for photography.

3. Destination: Summit on Bear Mountain and Amazing View of Lipno

Čertovo kopyto is only about halfway through the route! After exploring it, you still have a bit more of a climb ahead of you.

Only at the end of the trip will you reach the real reward – an amazing view of Lipno and the surrounding Šumava forests. This beautiful panoramic view opens up from the lookout rocks on the summit of Medvědí hora.

To enjoy the view, you must climb onto these stones. Don’t worry, it’s not a difficult mountaineering ascent. Even experienced hikers can manage it. The local panorama is the right reward that is worth the effort. It is an ideal spot for a final photograph.

From the summit, you can return the same way or choose a longer but very comfortable variant via Loučovice and along the Vltava. Combine three Šumava sights in one trip: the mysterious Godošova poustevna, the iconic Čertovo kopyto, and the rock lookouts on Medvědí hora.
