Dobrá Voda Lookout Tower – Views Worth Seeing
Just a few steps from the center of Horní Planá stands a new landmark of the town – the Dobrá Voda Lookout Tower. It was opened in 2021 on the hill of the same name at an altitude of 862 m and immediately became a popular destination for hikers.
The 37-meter high metal structure offers two viewing levels, the higher of which is located at a height of about 32 meters. 169 spiral steps will lead you to the top – and the reward is views that are definitely worth it.
From the tower platform, a panoramic view opens up of Lake Lipno, the peaks of Šumava (Plechý, Smrčina, Třístoličník), the Novohradské Mountains, and the Boletice Military Area. When the air is crystal clear, you can see as far as the Alps.
On the individual floors, there are panoramic boards with descriptions of the views.
The lookout tower is accessible year-round and free of charge. You can head to it following the blue tourist marker from the square in Horní Planá – the route leads through Stifter Park and around the Church of St. Margaret. The journey measures approximately 1.5 km with an elevation gain of about 100 m. The route can be managed even with a stroller, but count on the elevation gain.
Part of the project is also the restoration of the forest park with benches, gazebos, and resting places. Originally, a small viewpoint called “Paraplíčko” (Little Umbrella) stood on the site – today’s modern lookout tower has worthily replaced it. Its shape resembles a glass carafe and symbolically refers to the traditional glassmaking, which had a long history in the region.
