Imagine a majestic rock cliff towering over the Vltava valley. Jagged rocks creating fantastic shapes that seem to belong to another world. And below them? The Stone Sea – a field of giant granite boulders formed thousands of years ago by frost weathering. Untamed nature in all its glory.

A mysterious story about the origin of the rock

According to legend, a treasure is hidden here! Legend says that the devil himself tried to build a dam here to flood the Vyšší Brod monastery. When he failed, he threw boulders around him in a fit of rage – and thus the Stone Sea was created.

How best to get there (and where to park)

The easiest and fastest way is by car, which is also ideal for families with small children.

  • Parking: You can find it on the right side of road 163 when driving from Lipno nad Vltavou towards Vyšší Brod.
  • Short walk: From the parking lot, it’s just a short walk, approx. 300 meters on flat ground, to the main viewpoint (Devil’s Pulpit) and the Stone Sea.

Other options:

  • On foot from Vyšší Brod: You can walk along the tourist trail for about 3 km.
  • As part of a longer trip (7.5 km) from Lipno nad Vltavou.
  • Or comfortably 6 km along the cycle path leading from Lipno to Vyšší Brod. It is a beautiful trip along the Vltava River.
