Above the picturesque South Bohemian town of Vyšší Brod, almost below the peak of Marínkovský vrch, lies the Maria Rast am Stein chapel. A place where rich history intertwines with spirituality. The dominant feature is the impressive Way of the Cross, which guides visitors from the foot of the hill to the Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows at the summit.
The story of the Way of the Cross here began in 1767, when the Abbot of Vyšší Brod, Kajetán Steyrer, initiated the construction of 14 stone chapels. These small sacral buildings were originally equipped with paintings depicting passion scenes. Over the centuries, the chapels underwent a series of transformations. The paintings were later replaced by cast-iron reliefs, more resistant to the whims of the weather.
However, the adversity of time and historical events took their toll on the entire pilgrimage site, and by the end of the 20th century, the Way of the Cross was in a sorry state. Only the new millennium brought hope in the form of reconstruction. Thanks to the engagement of the local community and supporters, the chapels were sensitively restored and fitted with new artistic reliefs that connect traditional Christian symbolism with contemporary artistic expression.
The Way of the Cross to Maria Rast is fulfilling its purpose once again. It attracts not only believers but also lovers of history, art, and peaceful walks through nature. The winding rocky path climbing upwards among mature trees provides a relaxing experience in itself.
The destination of the pilgrimage is represented by the Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, built between 1710 and 1713. This charming building with rich interior decoration and a rare Marian image crowns the entire ascent. The area in front of the chapel then rewards pilgrims with a panoramic view of Vyšší Brod, the Vltava River, and the rolling horizons of the Šumava Mountains.
