Stožec Cycle Path: Train & Bike (3.9–15 km, 0–16 m ↑)

For Kids

The most beautiful cycle path in the heart of Šumava (Bohemian Forest). The combination of a train ride and a return by bike slightly downhill along the Vltava River is an unforgettable experience for children. The route leads through the national park, away from roads, and offers swimming in the river.

Cycle path from Stožec to Nová Pec

The Stožec – Nová Pec cycle path is an approx. 16 km long, flat section. It leads mainly through the forest, so even in the hot summer, you can ride in the shade and without the exhausting heat.

The surface is asphalt and well-maintained, ideal for mothers with strollers, small children on balance bikes, in-line skaters, and recreational cyclists. The path follows the course of the Vltava River and crosses the railway line several times – it is good to watch the children at the crossings. We regularly recommend this route to guests, and according to the feedback, most consider it the most beautiful cycle path near Lake Lipno – relaxed, safe, and with plenty of places to stop or swim along the way.

There are several ways to plan the trip. You can easily get to Nová Pec by train, car, or directly by bike. Those who don’t want to pedal the route back and forth can turn off at Stožec onto the Schwarzenberg Canal and return via Jelení in a loop back to Nová Pec, which will be a pleasant change and a different view of Šumava.

Shortened version: Stožec – Černý Kříž (for the little ones)

A great advantage of the Stožec cycle path is that you can shorten it as you like – for example, to the shortest section Stožec – Černý Kříž (3.9 km).

This route is an ideal adventure for the youngest cyclists. You can take the train to Stožec through the beautiful Šumava nature (current connections can be found on IDOS). Immediately after arrival, we recommend a small detour (approx. 500 m) to the renowned Fast food Stožec. They have a wonderful home atmosphere, good coffee, and famous homemade buns. If no one is around, just ring the bell and one of the owners will surely come.

Before you get on your bikes, the Information Centre or the Puštík Path – an interactive forest game area that will thrill the kids – are definitely worth a visit.

Then you head downhill towards the Vltava River. Roughly halfway through the route, there is a beautiful spot for swimming – the kids will have a blast in the river and the parents can relax in the peace of Šumava nature. From there, you continue comfortably on the flat to Černý Kříž, where the route ends. A total of only 3.9 km, so even the smallest ones can manage it.

In Černý Kříž, you have two options: either choose the train back to Hůrka, or extend the trip – for example to Nová Pec (approx. 10 km), Pernek, Horní Planá, or back to our Apartments Nad rybníky in Hůrka.

Why go and tips for parents

The train journey to Stožec itself is an experience for children. Halfway along the route, swimming in the Vltava River awaits – on the bank, bikes are often leaned against trees and children splash in the river. No beach loungers, but a real “wild” experience in nature. The rest of the journey is just a relaxed flat section to Černý Kříž, where you can have a lemonade or a popsicle at the U Stožce kiosk.

  • Bring swimwear – the kids simply won’t want to skip swimming in the Vltava.
  • The swimming spot is not an official beach, so count on “wilderness” – without facilities, but with peace and privacy.
  • If you have extra energy, you can follow a longer route from Černý Kříž – for example, all the way to us in Hůrka.
  • Pay attention to children at railway crossings!
  • You can buy tickets directly on the train, which is equipped with special wagons for transporting bicycles.
  • Trains with cycle wagons can be busy in season, so we recommend checking timetables and possibly securing a bike space reservation.
  • It’s good to check the opening hours of the “U Pstruha” restaurant.
  • At the Stožec – Nová Pec cycle path, you can easily park your car at both starting points.
