Cycling to Třístoličník (65 km, 584 m elevation)
A combination of a relaxing ride along the Vltava and a sports challenge. Climb to the top of Třístoličník and enjoy a long descent along the Schwarzenberg Canal.
When you go on holiday to Lake Lipno, it would be a shame to miss the Schwarzenberg shipping canal. This more than two-hundred-year-old structure was an absolute masterpiece for its time and remains one of the greatest technical monuments in the entire Bohemian Forest.
Because it leads through a picturesque landscape and has only mild elevation gain, its charm is best enjoyed from the saddle of a bicycle. (If you prefer walking, check out our tip for a shorter hiking trip along the canal). It is the Schwarzenberg cycle path that allows you to ride the entire canal from beginning to end and see all its unique structures up close.

The route starts at the Rosenauer monument, which commemorates the engineer who designed the canal. Right at the start of the route, the canal bed is currently being cleaned – today, 20.9.25, we saw excavators and part of the canal is already nicely cleared (the status of the work can, of course, change). From here, a comfortable gravel path continues, which descends gently and follows the historical bed of the canal.
At kilometer 11, you will pass the Jelení tunnel – an almost 400 m long rock breakthrough – and right after it, we recommend a short stop at the Schwarzenberg shipping canal exhibition in Jelení.
Roughly at kilometer 19, you will come across the Rossbach Aqueduct, where the canal crosses the Rossbach stream – a great place for a photo and a break. Around kilometer 30, the route crosses into Austrian territory. The surface here is excellent and the ride goes smoothly. About a kilometer into Austria, the pleasant Jausenstation Blauer Hirsch awaits you, where you can easily communicate and restock supplies. It is only open in summer and is closed from Monday to Wednesday.
The last 2 km before the end, the cycle path returns to the Czech Republic. The conclusion is easy and at the end, you can comfortably ride down to Lake Lipno. The closest point is the ferry in Dolní Vltavice.
The entire route measures about 44 km and the elevation gain is around 10 m, making it ideal even for families with children or recreational cyclists. The surface is paved and mostly leads through the forest, so it provides pleasant cooling even in the heat.
You can join the Schwarzenberg cycle path practically anywhere – for example in Stožec, Nová Pec, or near Horní Planá – and likewise, descend back to Lake Lipno at any time. A popular finish is at the ferry in Dolní Vltavice, from where you can comfortably return by boat.
After a day spent on the Schwarzenberg cycle path, you deserve a place where you can put your feet up, recharge, and the kids can entertain themselves. Our family accommodation at Lake Lipno is an ideal base for all cyclists – whether you came for a relaxed ride or a sporting challenge. You will find peace, comfort, and great facilities, including a pool, a playground, and a large garden. And when you want to take a break from the bikes, head out on trips in the area, to the beach, or other experiences for children.
Book your stay while options are still available.
We look forward to seeing you!
