The Austrian Ride – A Cycling Trip That Has It All (56 km, 781 m elevation)

Gravel MTB

A cycling route that connects the Czech Bohemian Forest with the Austrian border, the historical canal, and the ferry across Lake Lipno. An ideal cycling trip for those who want to ride through a stretch of forest, cross borders, enjoy views, and some fun terrain during one trip.

Route description:

The start is traditionally in Hůrka and after warm-up kilometers, you will reach Šumavská hospůdka (18th km), where you can take your first break. From here, the route continues uphill to the Czech side of the Schwarzenberg Canal – a forest asphalt road with minimal traffic. On your left, the canal flows, and at 18.7 km, you will pass the aqueduct. A kilometer further (19.6 km), there is an option for light refreshments at Říjiště. At 21.7 km, you will arrive at the border crossing Plešné Lake / Holzschlag. Here, the route turns left and climbs a bit more before transitioning into a descent.

The descent leads along an Austrian cycle path that crosses the ski slopes of the Hochficht resort – it runs more along the contour line, even though it is downhill. In the village of Schöneben, you can take a 5 km detour to the beautiful lookout tower Moldaublick. At 34 km, refreshments await you: Jausenstation Blauer Hirsch, where you can sit down for a meal or a beer. From here, you return towards the canal and at 46 km, you reach the Dolní Vltavice – Kyselov ferry. A short sail takes you back to the left bank of Lake Lipno. The final section around Windy Point (52nd km) is just the ride back to Hůrka, where you can end the route in style at the fish restaurant – perhaps with a great fish or a beer.

Attractions along the way:

– Paved road LC Rakouská – newly repaired section

– Aqueduct on the canal – technical uniqueness of old engineering

– Border crossing without barriers or customs officers

– Austrian Alpine meadows, cycle paths, and pubs

– Back to Lake Lipno in style across the water

Tip: If you want to enjoy the route without pushing, take a gravel or mountain bike.
